Hand Painted Pottery
Lee Davis has been making hand painted pottery for longer than he'd like to admit. His studio, Birdfoot Ridge, is located in Weaverville, NC, about 20 minutes north of Asheville. Asheville, the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western North Carolina, is the craft center of the southeast. The area draws artists and craftspeople like moths to a flame, so we are lucky to be surrounded with a wide range of work. The hand painted pottery by Lee is an example of art meeting craft after years of dedication to the traditional pottery process.
Lee throws and paints the pots himself and his partner Douglas does the glazing, they have no other employees, so you know that each piece is made with the proper attention to detail. In addition to tableware in functional and unique styles like a butter dish, garlic grater, or brie baker, they also produce functional decor. He is frequently coming up with new designs, but currently we have hand painted lamps, decorative plates, and water features to name a few.
Each piece is painted with brown or cobalt blue by hand. He uses a stencil to begin the general forms and then paints each line, one at a time, before glazing. Lee has taught and mentored two generations of potters in Western North Carolina, and we are very lucky to be able to show his hand painted pottery at the gallery. We like to think of it as "mountain pottery with a Provencial style."
All his tableware is microwave, non-toxic, and dishwasher safe. They feel very durable, user friendly as well as decorative. Many of his pots come with a recipe specially taylored to the design of the piece, such as this one in his popular brie baker: sprinkle Jack Daniels on brie, add brown sugar and sliced almonds, and bake at 350 in the brie baker for about 10 minutes. Serve with pear slices, crackers, or crusty bread.
