Asheville jeweler,  Chris Van Dyke.

I am a second generation craftsman moving into my twentieth year making jewelry, and ten years as a jeweler in Asheville. I started my apprenticeship with my father at nineteen and quickly realized that I had found my calling. I spent the early part of my career working with my dad in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania (a lovely town in the heart of PA) where the standard was simply to make every piece "true." I came to realize that "true" was another way for my dad to say "It’s gotta get past me, Pal." This is a standard that I continue to strive for with each of my pieces. Peer review is the Everest I climb with each and every one of my designs. I truly love what I do, and, though it is a bit of cliche, I believe it shows in my work. I spend an enormous amount of time on each design and still get a thrill when I finish a new piece.

After a number of years in Bloomsburg I moved west in search of warmer weather and what turned out to be some great mountain biking. I lived in Phoenix for two years and worked in a mom-and-pop shop doing their jewelry repairs. Though the work itself did not give me an outlet to be creative it was invaluable in teaching me efficiency.

Phoenix had another huge influence in my career in that it was there that I decided to attend the Gemological Institute of America. It was at the G.I.A. that I learned all about diamonds and colored stones, where they come from, how they are formed, the business behind them, and, most importantly, how to talk knowledgeably to my customers. It gave me the chance to really know what I was putting in these pieces I was working so hard on. An incredible experience that shaped me as a craftsman in ways that have improved my metalsmithing. My degree also gives my customers confidence that I am serious about my trade and know of what I speak.

For over 10 years I have been a jeweler in Asheville, North Carolina, a stunning city that is cemented in my heart and where I hope to call home for a very long time. My crowning achievement here my family. I have three beautiful boys, Sayer, Coleman and Carter (all Asheville natives). My lovely wife Sharon and I are very busy riding the roller coaster that only a 1st grader a 4 year old and a toddler can manufacture. (Oh.....the homework, soccer pratices and diapers!)
